Quick answer
On electric ovens, the usual suspects are a burned-out bake element (visible break or blister in the coil) or a failed temperature sensor. On gas ovens, it’s the igniter about 80% of the time — if the igniter glows but the burner never lights, the igniter is too weak and needs replacing.
Electric ovens
1. Bake element burned out. Look at the lower element — breaks, blisters, or bright spots mean it’s done.
2. Temperature sensor (RTD probe). If the oven heats but the temperature is wildly off, the sensor may have failed. A cheap part, but diagnosis takes a multimeter.
3. Control board / relay. If neither element heats at all and the breaker is fine, the board may not be sending power.
Gas ovens
1. Weak igniter (most common). The igniter must draw enough current to open the gas valve. A glowing igniter that never triggers the burner is the textbook symptom — replace it.
2. Gas supply. Check other gas appliances. If the cooktop works but the oven doesn’t, supply isn’t the issue.
3. Safety valve. Rare, but the valve itself can fail closed.
Safety
Never work on gas components yourself. If you smell gas, don’t touch anything electrical — leave and call your gas utility.
Uneven heating (both types)
Worn door gaskets leaking heat, wrong rack position or blocked airflow from oversized pans, or a failing sensor reading 50–75° off — all common and fixable.
Simple checks first
1. Confirm the clock/timer isn’t in delayed or Sabbath mode (locks out heating on some models). 2. Electric: check the breaker — ovens need 240V. 3. Look at the bake element for visible damage.
When to call a pro
Igniters, elements, sensors, and gaskets are all routine same-day repairs. Gas work especially belongs to a professional.
FAQ
My oven takes forever to preheat — is that a problem?
Often a weakening igniter (gas) or aging element (electric). It’ll fail completely eventually; fixing it now avoids a dead oven before a holiday dinner.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old oven?
For an igniter or element, usually yes. If the control board is gone on an old unit, replacement starts making sense.
Why does my oven burn everything on the bottom?
Usually a failing bake element cycling incorrectly, or the bottom element stuck on — both repairable.
