Quick answer

Start with the simple stuff: thermostat settings, blocked vents inside the fridge, dirty condenser coils, and door seals. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the evaporator fan or defrost system is the likely culprit. Anything involving sealed-system refrigerant needs a licensed technician.

Check in this order

1. Thermostat settings. Fridge should be 37–40°F, freezer at 0°F. Dials get bumped — if someone recently adjusted them, give the unit 24 hours to stabilize.

2. Blocked interior vents. Cold air flows from the freezer to the fridge through vents, usually at the back wall. Food pushed against them blocks circulation — rearrange so vents breathe.

3. Dirty condenser coils. The black coils underneath or behind the fridge shed heat. When caked in dust and pet hair, the fridge can’t cool efficiently. Unplug the unit and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. Do this yearly.

4. Door seals (gaskets). Close the door on a dollar bill — if it slides out easily, the seal is leaking cold air. Clean seals with warm soapy water first; cracked or torn gaskets need replacing.

5. Evaporator fan (freezer cold, fridge warm). This fan pushes cold air from the freezer into the fridge. Open the freezer and listen — you should hear it running. Silence plus a warm fridge points here.

6. Defrost system failure. Heavy frost on the freezer’s back wall means the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer failed. A manual defrost (unplug 24 hours, doors open) temporarily restores cooling, but the problem returns without repair.

7. Start relay / compressor issue. Clicking from the back plus no cooling often means the compressor start relay failed — a relatively cheap part. A silent, hot compressor is more serious.

Food safety note

Perishables above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be discarded. When in doubt, throw it out — a service call costs less than food poisoning.

When to call a pro

Fan motors, defrost components, relays, and thermostats are routine same-day repairs. Refrigerant leaks and compressor replacements are bigger jobs — a technician can tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes sense.

FAQ

Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?

Almost always an airflow problem — failed evaporator fan, iced-over coils from defrost failure, or blocked vents.

How long should a refrigerator last?

10–15 years on average. Under 10 years with a fan, relay, or defrost issue, repair is usually the smart money.

Can I just keep manually defrosting it?

You can buy time, but heavy frost returns within days to weeks until the defrost system is fixed.
